#SuperSchoolShoutOut: Virtual Learning Program!
Posted on 05/23/2024

This week, we’re showing our #CPSDPride by giving a #SuperSchoolShoutOut to the Gravelly Lake K-12 Academy Virtual Learning Program (VLP) with kindergartner Gwendolyn Coddington and teacher Marco Hornbeck!

Gwendolyn has thrived in the VLP where her family and teachers are continuously impressed by her growth. “My favorite subject is math class with Mr. Hornbeck,” she said. “We get to do fun games and make things like catapults that launch erasers with rubber bands and popsicle sticks.”

Gwendolyn, who loves wearing colorful dresses every day, is very creative and enjoys when she can create art or science projects during lessons. “I think I’m a fun person because I like to make things fun all the time,” she said. “I love painting, drawing, and arts and crafts also.”

Gwendolyn is just as proud as her family of the progress she has made as a student this year. “I did a lot of work," she said. "I’m learning how to read, and I’m proud of myself for being really good in school."

Marco has worked in CPSD for 25 years and joined the VLP last year to teach kindergarten through fifth grade. “When the district was virtual in 2020, I really enjoyed teaching online,” he said. “I love the collaboration between the teachers, parents and students that happens in the virtual setting.”

VLP learners also gather in person at events, field trips and get-togethers where students, families and teachers enjoy building connections. “One of the best days here was the STEAM Fair here at Gravelly Lake where the students were so excited and gave their all,” Marco said. “Six out of seven students placed at the district competition, so I was very proud.”

After his first year in the VLP, Marco is in awe of the program’s strides and can’t wait to see how the VLP grows in the future. “It’s going to be tough to beat this year, but I know next year we’ll make it even better,” he said.
